my first 18 miler

This weekend I finally conquered 18 miles.  According to my training plan, I was supposed to do it last weekend, but after all the birthday festivities that just wasn’t going to happen.

I went out to White Rock Lake around 1:30 yesterday afternoon.  Before I got out there, I was actually pretty excited about running it.  I always get excited when I am running a distance I’ve never ran before.  Guess I’m a big fan of challenges. Anyway, my attitude did a complete 180 once I actually started running. Around parts of the lake, it felt like it was about 90 degrees with some major wind gusts.  For the whole first hour I didn’t know how I was going to get through it.  Luckily, my run ended up being about 3 hours, so I had two hours to get my mind in a better place. Finally after about 9 miles, I started feeling strong.  I finished the run and am now looking forward to next weeks 20 miler. Eek!!!

Once I got finished, I proceeded to eat and drink everything I came into contact with.  Always a good time.  So far I haven’t had too many problems with marathon training.  Despite having to work runs into a pretty busy schedule, everything else has been smooth sailing.  I have about 5 weeks left till the race and plan to do a 20 miler and a 22 miler, with a rest week in between, and then begin my taper.  This is my first marathon so we will see how this plan goes for me.  All of the advice I’ve been given from other runners is to not set a time goal for your first marathon.  Everyone says your goal should be just to finish. But, as a competitive person, it is so hard for me to not set a time goal.  I run most of my half marathons at or a little under 2 hours, so I think 4.30 is a pretty safe time goal.  Hopefully I am not setting myself up for disaster.

After my run, Wes and Ray had a pumpkin carving/scary movie watching party at their apartment. I was pretty useless with the pumpkin carving thing.  Standing up wasn’t really part of my game plan last night, but I did partake in the scary movie watching…. which may or may not of been a good idea.  I am way to easy to scare, and I scream like a 5 year old. Not cool.  I do plan on carving my pumpkin sometime this week though.   Tonight is totally dedicated to pie making though, so it will have to be later this week.  I can’t believe it is only 6 more days till Halloween, and then it’s November.  I’m so excited for the holidays!

http://www.sorethumbsblog.com/ - I love the breeze. Being in Charleston, we have a constant breeze off the water and it is so nice to open up the windows and feel the cool Spring air! Not to mention all the azaleas blooming. It is definitely a gorgeous time of year to be here! Thanks for the chance to win! Love that set!!!
