It’s time to vote again!
This time it is for the fan favorite portion of the Healthy Food Fight. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Aetna decided to add another layer to the contest. Whoever is voted “fan favorite” will get to donate $10,000 to a charity of their choice.
I struggled with who to pick as my charity of choice. Initially, I had hoped to give my potential donation to Paws in the City and The One Society, the two organizations I am most active in. However, Aetna said the selected charity must be one that promotes a healthy lifestyle and is related to food. When I heard the stipulations, my mind immediately went to Deep Ellum Urban Gardens.
From their website, Deep Ellum Urban Garden’s vision is to provide opportunities for people to grow food for themselves, increase their healthy activity, get to know their neighbors, learn from each other, and create a productive and beautiful commons.
Perfect. Gardening is something I’ve always been interested in. Unfortunately my townhome does not provide any space to have a garden besides my patio, which faces direct sun for the majority of the day. This summer, when I was visiting my relatives who all have beautiful gardens, I had a little visit from the green-eyed monster . Jealousy was running rampant as I walked through their vast and healthy gardens. Deep Ellum Urban Gardens will give Dallas residents a chance to have their very own garden space, enabling them to grow their own food. Whether I win the contest or not, I can’t wait to be a part of this initiative.
If you have a chance, please visit the Aetna – Healthy Food Fight and place your vote. You can vote once a day through December 2nd.
