I’ve had lots of people ask me what kinds of things they should always keep in stock in their pantry and fridge. I think I probably tend to lean to “over-doing” it in terms of what I keep mine stocked with, but I like to be prepared for anything! Of course, produce varies by season, but here is a general list of some good suggestions for your pantry, fridge, and freezer. And a bonus sneak peak into what I currently have in stock.
|How many peanut butter jars do you see?|
Flour: white all-purpose, wheat, etc
Sugar: white, brown, and powdered
Nuts: almond and pecan
Stock: chicken and beef
Tomatos: crushed, whole
Beans: black, garbanzo, kidney, pinto, green
Pumpkin (this may only be a me thing)
Vinegar: white, balsamic, apple cider
Oil: canola and olive
Mayo or miracle whip
Milk: regular, almond, or soy
Half & Half
Cheese: goat, cheddar, parm, mozarella, etc… Pick your favorite!
Veggies & Fruits
I like to keep what is in season, but also will always have these in my fridge
Onions: white, red, and green
Meat: Chicken, turkey, beef, whatever your preference is
Ice cream: multiple flavors, duh.
Frozen entrees: I like to freeze soups, chilis, and a variety of other things that I make to have on hand in case I just don’t feel like cooking
This list is in no way comprehensive, but is just a good overall guide of items that are handy to have around. It will allow you to prepare a variety of meals in almost any situation. Of course, the list will vary depending on your eating habits. If you are a vegetarian, you will want to have more beans, tofu, and other fresh in-season vegetables on hand. Or if you are an Atkins junkie, then you’ll definitely need to add bacon and red meat to the list. I’m sure many of you have also heard that the best way to shop is to shop the outside aisles of the grocery store. Not only will you find the items that are the freshest and best for your health, but you’ll be helping your budget out as well.
I’m not going to get into spices because my spice cabinet is huge. I say just buy what you like to season with!
